Surround Yourself With Great People

I have read all of Donald Miller’s books and I skim his blog postings. There are few people that have made me come back to an idea over and over again, that make me think about how I can live my life better, but Don Miller has hit that sweet spot with his recent book A Million Miles in a Thousand Years.

The book focuses on making your life a great story and one way he suggests is by surrounding yourself with great people. I have been thinking about this lately and realize there are some wonderful people in my life who I feel fit into that category. People I know that radiate God like a heat lamp, and who I can honestly say inspire me in my Christian life. There are also friends I have who seem wise beyond their years, who remind me that I’m only 30 and there is a lot more for me to learn in life. I also have adventurous friends who globe trot and see the best in God’s creation and serve the greatest of those in need, even if it means using their vacation time to live in a slum helping children abused in the sex trade.

Do I live a great story?  Do people consider me a great person to surround themselves with? I’m not sure, but I know I would like it to be, though I still feel pretty selfish at times.  Some of you know that this has been the Year of Others for me, and I have met so many of my goals and done some things that I never expected to do including guiding a new website project for a non profit and serving at a soup kitchen on my 30th birthday.  Still there is so many possibilities of things I can do…which is exciting and daunting at the same time.  So many ways a life can be made great…and in so many ways mine already is.

A great podcast I listen to is called The Moth.  People get on a stage and tell stories about their life experiences.  At the end of the podcast they say a line that I love and want to live by.  So to close out with their words: Have a story worthy week.
